Most
of you should not have heard of it... Some of
you might have purchased through it. But only
a few of you have sold anything through it.
Elance is a work / project marketplace, where
buyers post works / projects for bidding by sellers.
Elance of course offers a listing service - where
you can list all the kind of jobs you are able
to offer, but according to my experience buyers
almost never see those listings, since they are
able to post a project for bidding.

About
nine months ago I signed up with Elance. I soon
realised that if I wanted to get any decent jobs,
I needed to move up from the basic level. I decided
to upgrade (at a cost of about $25 a quarter)
to the next level - for which I received the princely
(NOT) total of three free leads a month.
The
upgrade did next to nothing for me. I was invited
to bid on one project (which never completed),
bid on a couple more, but mostly couldn't believe
how low some people were willing to bid for a
skilled writing job. I mean, 100 SEO-optimized
articles for $100 - are these people serious?

Elance
is a very costly site for service providers. It
picks your pocket by both hands - (1) A hefty fee
on registration, and (2) Additional 8.75% of the
cost of the project, with minimum of $10 (25%, if
Project Cost is $50).
Its refund policy is also quite defective. For its
own fee etc., it uses very prompt methods of payment
thru Credit Card, but adopts dilatory tactics by
not providing any Link for deposit for the purpose
of refund to the buyer, if for some reason the transaction
does not mature and buyer wants his money back.
Elance insists on using snail mail to send Bank
draft with the risk of having lost in transit. Causes
a bad name to the honest service providers.

Completely
awful. Elance was worth using years ago at its
inception, before it charged outrageous subscription
fees and took unreasonable cuts from any of the
projects you managed to win. When they realized
they were really the only site out there like
it with a growing base of freelancers, they took
advantage of this and began charging monthly fees.
Then they began charging a project percentage
in addition to the subscription, which went from
unreasonable to ridiculous, given the lack of
quality control in the marketplace.
They
additionally placed a limit on number of bids
allotted. Elance tailored itself from the get
go to lowballers willing to design logos and websites
for under $100. Elance has favored its buyers
over its providers from the get go in order to
woo businesses in to post their projects, most
of which went unawarded. The feedback system is
unfair and unbalanced, leaving professionals wide
open to feedback extortion. Elance consistently
disregards legally binding contracts and does
not protect its providers--the very ones who generate
income for the site.

I
needed a small website created and posted the project
on Elance.com for open bidding. I accepted a bid
for $1000 from a bidder in New Jersey and paid him
a $500 deposit. I never heard from the service provider
after I paid him and within 2 weeks his email address
was no longer valid. Bad, very bad business. I wouldn’t
recommend Elance at all.

At
Elance, it's a buyer's market. Something we could
not see until we paid for a basic membership is
that the majority of buyers are shopping for low-ball
bids -- which are often awarded overseas for exorbitantly
low rates. Although frowned upon by Elance, many
of these buyers are just tire kicking, extending
bidding periods or not awarding the job at all.
Buyers can get away with insisting on having the
work up front (e.g. complete mock-ups, etc.) before
they even have awarded the job; and lots of overseas
sellers will oblige.
We found Elance's customer support to be sufficient
but slow to respond (and in one instance they
passed the buck on an issue sending us off to
one of their service providers only to have the
service provider refer us back to Elance where
the problem was surreptitiously resolved). Bottom
line: though we would consider using Elance again
some day as Buyers looking to outsource, we cannot
recommend Elance's basic Enhanced Listing membership
for Sellers (it's currently $30/month, and $3/bid
(which can add up quickly) -- plus Elance gets
their cut (almost 9 percent) if you win the project
.

This
is a great auctionplace for selling and buying
services over the internet. To use the site you
have to register as either a buyer or seller and
also register a currency to buy or sell in.
Buyers display jobs in various categories and
display a price they wish to pay for the service.
This is whats know as a reverse auction and as
a service provider (seller) your tactic would
be to bid a price lower than that of the buyers
initial estimate.
